Day 13 – The Last Starfighter (1984): Beta

A beta unit is a simuloid. An exact duplicate of you, only not as loud.

The Last Starfighter is easily one of my favourite films of all time, I get that some of it is shallow wish fulfilment for guys of the 80s but I don’t care – it is very good at what it does.  Again there is any number of characters I could have picked but the Beta Unit mid-transformation scared the shit out of me as a kid and the image of that face has stuck with me my entire life.

I would like to note that one of my favourite lines in a film is in The Last Starfighter when Alex and Centari return to earth and he says I’m just a kid in a trailer park and Centuri says if that’s what you believe, what you truly believe, then that is all you’ll ever be.

As a kid from a poor family living mostly in regional country towns that line resonated with me and even today, I find it inspirational, not bad for a wish-fulfilment film about video games.

This is part of the 366 Characters from 366 Films project running throughout 2020. The original illustrations go on sale over on the Lee Draws Stuff store the same day (around 9:00 am Brisbane time) and are available until someone snaps it up.

Remember if you dig my stuff and wouldn’t mind seeing semi-daily journal entries which include sneak peeks, behind the scenes and first looks then head over to Patreon and subscribe for as little as $1 (US) a month.
