I wasn’t going to take part in Inktober / Drawlloween this year because I expect the first half of the month is going to be VERY disrupted for me.
I’m packing up all our worldly possessions and joining my wife in Tasmania in the second week of October and everything is all over the place. I’m not going to have all my art supplies, my computer or scanner.
But since I’m often talking about creativity anywhere I figure I should walk the talk and have found a way to participate.
This is an awesome notebook that I picked up a couple of years ago. It’s made up of a bunch of different paper types all recycled with different textures and colours etc.
I’ve been meaning to put it to good work and I’m going to fill a page everyday with the theme of the day. I’ll take a photo with my phone and post it online (until I get access to my scanner again and then I’ll probably switch).
I always enjoy these challenges and this is my first time setting the prompts which every year I threaten to do.
So I’m currently in a mad race to finish 95% of the outstanding commission requests before I have to pack everything up here and live like a nomad for a couple of weeks.
It’s an exciting time and the challenge is to give everyone the awesome effort they’re hoping for which has been part of the reason for many of the delays.
I can assure you that when I’m at the bottom of a very deep dark depression well you don’t want me to work on your illustration LOL. The last twelve months have definitely been the most challenging I think I’ve ever faced and whilst we’re not out of it completely there is most definitely real light at the end of the tunnel.
Dawn is breaking as the sparkly vampires might say.
What a great way to kick of this stampede though by doing a batch of really fun DS9 sketch cards!
Remember with these sets I’m not picking the characters (actually I got to pick one which was Jake and Nog) so save your complaints of not including Garak!
This week’s Creative Prompt is “Inspired by music…” which in part was inspired by last week’s recycle an old idea. Back in 2010 I drew a series of robots whilst listening to specific songs and drawing inspiration from the song. Not necessarily in a literal form, more of a vibe and I actually still have them (I think I’ve got all of them). Sadly one or two I’ve forgotten what song it was they were set to which is a shame!
I will admit that right up until I started penciling this I wasn’t 100% sure how I was going to tackle the awakening of the one. The image slowly revealed itself to me as I worked on it.
Firstly I decided to do it from this angle and then very purposely kept the whole thing very simple and tried to capture the bullet time effect using the greens and blue grey that I’ve been using throughout the challenge.
It was such a lot of fun but I admit I’m glad I kept it to two weeks though I can’t believe how quickly that time seemed to go.
Thank you to everyone who supported and took part in the challenge!
If I was doing a longer challenge then the whole crew would have gotten their own entries but since I was limited I thought Cypher was an important element to include.
The obvious scene is probably his steak dinner but I wanted another real world scene if only to give my green’s a break lol. I struggled to get a good look at the lightning rod so I’ve just tried to approximate it and ise a little short hand.
I have a lot more thoughts on Cypher but I won’t go into them because I have limited bandwidth on my phone!
There is no spoon and currently there is no internet at my house, I’m hot spotting using my phone to check emails and activities like this which take about three times as long because my mobile reception is also garbage.
So this is late because yesterday I had to give in the black dog of depression and ride out a very bad bought of it. It came on fast and it was pretty savage, I mean it’s not completely out the blue, we’ve been living under extreme stress levels but yesterday it all sneaked up on me.
I wanted to do at least one “obvious” piece (well I know I’ve done a couple) and this is such a pivatol moment in the film. I’ve gone a bit rogue with some of the elements but I just wanted to make it all work as I saw it in my head.
I originally drew the bullet waves to capture the effect and to be honest it did a pretty good job but I had it in my head to try the water trail effect and just throw caution to the wind and see how this came out.
I like it but I’d have to draw it again the other way to tell for sure what I would have preferred.
