You’re out! – 2017

Take me out to the Holosuite is a really fun Deep Space Nine episode that takes a break from the Dominion War to have at least a little fun.  This is a Star Trek commission piece which I was given free rein on as long as it was from this episode and we decided to make sure Worf was in there.

Because of the very nature of the episode I made sure this felt a bit fun and didn’t go in for a huge amount of detail!

Commander Riker, boldy going – a Star Trek TNG illustration

Commander William T Riker – 2017

The Star Trek Commission Piece request was for a Commander Riker illustration as long as he had the beard. So I wanted to put him somewhere really alien and exploring instead of fighting.  There’s a line in Star Trek Insurrection that resonates with me from Picard, “Can anyone remember when we used to be explorers?“.

Occasionally I feel that’s been lost as Star Trek has struggled to find its way 50 years on.  Whilst I understand that external conflict provides story lines and plot progression sometimes I think the wonder is lost in the battle with the next bigger foe.  Of course Star Trek Insurrection attempted this to critical complaints so what do I know.

I’ll check out an Obi-Wan film on one condition

Ewan McGregor has to play him.

Ewan McGregor’s performance as the younger Obi-Wan Kenobi was one of the few standouts from the Star Wars prequel and the idea of a gritty western style Star Wars film featuring him would be kick arse.

Rumours came out the other day that Disney is ready to commit to an Obi-Wan spin off film and seriously it seems like a slam dunk to get McGregor involved as he’s stated in the past his willingness to do it.

Go back to its Akira Kurosawa roots and do something gritty and awesome.

It’s no secret I became jaded with the commercialism of Star Wars years ago and nothing they’ve released has really been worthy of elevating itself above that but this has all kinds of potential to it and there’s no real reason for them not to do something interesting – it’s already money in the bank for them.  Slap the logo on oranges and they sell!

So fingers crossed they do it right!

Curse you Rocketeer said the Nazis

I’ve always loved the aesthetics of the Rocketeer despite thinking that it was an okay film. A lot of this, of course, has to do with the posters which are simply stunning and I highly recommend seeking out the unused posters.  They were very kindly shared with me by someone involved with the production but alas that was on a former site.

I did this piece back in 2014 which surprised me because it must have been one of the very first of my “no nose” era.  I dug another one out of the archives from around the same period and it still had noses (a Planet of the Apes illustration in case you were wondering).

I just dug the original illustration out of my archives and it’s now up on Etsy if anyone is interested.

Curse the Rocketeer said the Nazis – 2014

Obviously, I’m dragging this one out of the archives because for some incomprehensible reason Nazis are a legitimate topic of late.  How white supremacists can actively exist in this day and age is simply beyond me.  I’m not that political, having worked in the public service for eight or so years I’ve generally kept my political ideas to myself.  That being said though, it doesn’t seem to be that radical an idea to suggest that one is anti-Nazis.  In fact having to make that statement seems almost ludicrous, it is a given, it’s like saying I’m a human being.  It’s not needed, you already assume this of me.

But in light of recent events apparently, that isn’t an assumption one can reasonably make.  Which again, I struggle to wrap my brain around.

What I don’t struggle with is how awesome this CGI series of the Rocketeer would have been!

Remember the original is available over on Etsy.

Probably not what you were looking for

So the other night I was doing some updates and then my WordPress install crashed and got stuck in maintenance mode.  Not a huge disaster but enough that I had to Google the problem and would then have to go in and delete a file to reset it.  I think I’ve actually done it before on a work site but it was ages ago and even in this case I think I just ran repair table on the database which did the trick.

In those moments though where I realised that I hadn’t bothered with a back up in ages and I wondered if the problem was going to be catastrophic (I’d suffered one of those in the past on a previous blog) I wasn’t all that upset.

I’d spent ages putting together an artist website but I didn’t really care about it.

So after I fixed the problem I pulled the plug.

Extreme, I realise but then I’ve never been one for half measures, my various hair cuts over the years will attest to this fact.  I guess I didn’t feel the website really said anything about me or reflected me.  Most of my work is on display through various social channels and that’s good and embracing the current way of life online but I miss blogging.

Blogging changed my whole life, introduced me to people I love dearly and gave me a whole new career.  I know it’s not in fashion right now unless you’re an A lister or attached to some blogging conglomerate but I miss it all the same and feel I’ve gotten lazy with the 140 character and photo updates that I can instantly publish.

I do have Lee Writes Stuff and I think I’ll keep that site for much longer form articles, things I have to ponder longer or research but I think Lee Draws Stuff is a good domain to just draw shit and write rubbish and to hell with the marketing!  Like I’ll add stuff to the sidebars and you’ll be able to buy stuff but I think I’m just going to go back to throwing up sketches and pics and writing about stuff on a much more regular schedule.

I’ll need to work out what I’m doing with my social channels, what content goes on there that still keeps them engaging but I want here to be the place where all my stuff is kept and you can follow along on my misadventures LOL.

Thanks for visiting and sorry whatever you clicked to come here wasn’t here.  It will show up on here again, I’ve got plenty of days to fill and a lot of stuff in my archives to put back online but for now, why not follow me on Twitter or Facebook to get notifications when posts go up here?
